Mislead by the Natural Community
Hey Nappy Nation, I'm back again.
I would like start by saying I am not a newly natural, but for some reason I'm always finding out something new that would have changed the game for me completely. I'm not gonna do y'all like they did me though. So, lets get into it.
So, the natural community raves about low manipulation hair styles, give your hair a break, stop touching your hair, don't build up product, and all that jazz. Listening to these rules has caused me to neglect my hair. I'm not a huge person on protective styles so my hair is always out or in a bun. My hair, afro curly hair, would dry out so bad but I wouldn't add any product to help it until a couple days pass or next wash day thinking I was doing good following these rules. A lie. When I did get my protective styles I thought that meant my hair was secure inside and I didn't have to do ANYTHING to it. Also a lie.
Curly hair is naturally dry and fragile. Keeping it in that sate will cause breakage. Your hair needs some kind of attention no matter what style its in. Oiling your scalp and spritzing a water, moisturizing solution while in a protective style is key. If you wear your hair out moisturize your hair everyday if you need to is key.
Since I don't protective style and my hair was always dry, I decided to ditch these rules and listen to my hair. Every night now, I sprits my hair with water, add a moisturizer, and then sealed it with an oil, and then put on my satin bonnet. When I tell you I have seen a change in my hair, its ridiculous. My hair in the mornings feels so soft and moisturized. (checkout "Sleep Tight" kurlkit, its based off this regiment)
TIP#4) Dry hair is the ultimate enemy for curls.
I later found this video of her saying how her hair gets some kind of moisture everyday so she doesn't have to do all the things that naturals praise upon. Which I found interesting.
